What to include in a weekly status report

Status first. Green, yellow or red, with one line on why. Someone who reads only this line should know where things stand.

What moved. Results, not activity: what is done or decided, not what you worked on.

At risk or blocked. Name it early, with what it's waiting on.

What you need. A decision, an owner, a deadline. Ask for it in so many words.

How to write a weekly report your boss reads

  • Use the same four parts every week, so they know where to look.
  • Keep each item to one line. Link to details instead of pasting them.
  • Write it from notes kept during the week, not from memory on Friday.

Status report or progress report?

The same thing under two names. This template works for either, and for a project status report to a client.
