Async standup template
Run your standup in writing: three questions your team answers on their own time. No meeting.
Run async standups with your team
Post these three questions where your team writes, once a day:
What did you do yesterday?
What will you do today?
Anything blocking you?
Announce it: the kickoff message
Post this to your team the week before. Change the day, the time and where to answer.
From Monday, no more status meeting. Instead, post three short answers in #team-updates by 10:00 each day: 1. What did you do yesterday? 2. What will you do today? 3. Anything blocking you? A line or two each is enough. Blockers get answered the same day. If you're off, just say so.
Rather not post the questions and chase answers every morning? Asynco Pro sends them on your schedule and reminds whoever hasn't answered.
See what a good answer looks like
Fill it in as one of your team would, then copy it for Slack or as text.
Your standup shows here as you type.
Rules that keep async standups alive
- Make only today's plan required. A standup that takes two minutes gets written.
- Ask at the same time every day, early in each person's day.
- Answer blockers the same day. If nobody reacts, people stop writing them.
- Don't read the updates out loud in a meeting. That's the meeting you replaced.
- Planned time off is not silence. Don't chase people on vacation.
Async standup or daily standup meeting?
Same three questions, in writing instead of a call. Blockers still surface, and nobody stops their work at 9:30 to hear ten status updates.
